ut before I bought my G4 Digital Audio I had a G3 Beige MT. I put a 466 mhz G4 in it and an ATA pci card with several big drives. Also a pci video card, like the Radeon 7000. Also a firewire/usb pci card. I ran the latest version of a high end video editor and did very sophisticated work. Just a little slower than the other guys, mostly in rendering, much of which can be done overnight.

Newer is better, but some of the investment in an older machine can be moved up to newer. Drives, ATA cards and some memory (PC 133) will work fine in the DA
or Quicksilver models.

Unfortunately, the cost of all those improvements you made to the G3 are prohibitive today; they'd cost more than buying a Mini, and that would be a brand new computer. Moving from the G3 to an AGP G4 of some sort IS the 'phased improvement'.
