(Still mad that Apple dumped LocalTalk networking in X -- now I'll have
to get a router or hub, & some kind of bridge to use my HP LaserJet 4
ML...) :[

Does the LJ4 ML have the MIO slot? If so you can usually find the HP Ethernet card for the MIO slot pretty cheaply. In fact, there's a version of the MIO card with 10baseT and LocalTalk on the same card.

I've been using a MicroAsantePrint which is the predecessor to the AsanteTalk for several years now to put the TI MicroLaser+ and LocalTalk IWII on our home network. I think I saw some of the AsanteTalks at SmallDog for a low price. They may have been missing the power supply though.

You need an external bridge, according to my research. I've looked for the HP bridges on eBay, but they're still a little too expensive for my blood. If I have to, I'll just put LocalTalk Bridge on my 6500.

I know the rationale for dumping LT support: Jobs knew that the target machines for X, the New World Macs, weren't going to have serial ports anyway, & supporting LT would just bloat X's code some more; you have to cut somewhere.

Still, the image of "a Mac & a (LocalTalk-connected) LaserWriter (or other Postcript laser printer)" has gone together for 2 decades, especially in the graphic arts (I know, most studios had gone to ethernet by then), & it somehow just feels "wrong". I mean, they supported the QuickDraw serial printers (some of them), didn't they?
