He often starts the computer, but without much of anything happening. Yes, the light on the computer turns on, but that DING never happens; the system startup doesn't kick in. He often turns it off and on for hours, and it will finally turn on. Then he uses it. And it may work just fine for several start-ups, and then go flaky again. What's the problem? [snip] Any other ideas?>> Just to add to list of possibilities already mentioned, if your colleague is using a power strip, try waiting 5-10 seconds before powering on the B & W. My B & W also refused to DING consistently at startup and replacing the PRAM battery did no good. It turned out my B & W had insufficient power available when I hit the power key on the keyboard (ADB keyboard). The apparent reason was the B & W is plugged into a power strip with surge protection and the monitor is a vary large Radius 21" color display. When I hit the ON switch of the power strip, and then hit the power button on the keyboard usually a second or two later there was not enough time for the full power to be available for the B & W. Then when I did the three finger restart all was OK. I never had this problem with the Mac the B & W replaced. I discovered it would take a few seconds for the green light on the monitor to glow brightly and to hear the noise of the monitor getting up to power. Now I hit the keyboard power key a few seconds after the monitor is fully powered on and all is well. If your colleague is using a power strip, try waiting 5-10 seconds before powering on the B & W -- just a long shot idea. --glen -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
