This may be *their* opinion on how things work Harry, but I can tell
you from practical experience it's bunk! As long as the jumpers are
set on the drives (Master/slave), it doesn't matter which connector
you
connect each drive to.
Not all ATA controllers are created equal. In the past I have worked
with computers that would NOT recognize the drives correctly if you
did not connect them according to the "master on the end" scheme.

As for cable select, this is a throw back to the old days when
special cables with a twist were used to denote which drive was
which. As far as I know it's not used at all anymore.
And up until last Christmas I thought the same thing. Then I got a
brand new Western Digital 160 Gig drive and read the following quote
in the instructions:
"Cable Select is the default setting for Western Digital EIDE hard
drives and requires a special cable (included). If your system
supports Cable Select, there is no need to reposition the jumper
shunt on the drive. If you are installing your new Western Digital
hard drive with an existing IDE drive on the cable, make sure that
the other drive is also jumpered as Cable Select. If your system
does not support Cable Select or if you are uncertain, use the Single
or Master/Slave configuration."
