Most if not all of the cable modems you can telnet to for configuration.
I have not found one that does not have a router/NAT capability to allow
multiple systems. 
Most of the time the web setup page for a modem is the easiest route to
take.

Linksys is the low end production line for CISCO.

As for MACs and PCs on the same net, my home network at 2 MACs (G3 & 7500),
6 PCs with Windoze products and 2 pcs with linux. All can communicate with
each other and on the internet.

Some one just Slap the brat about the head and shoulders. Get the lady
setup. I wish Colorado was a tad closer to NJ I would go set it up.
