I did google it and I did follow the 2nd guide you provided, but the problem was that the 2nd guide mounted in the wrong directory entirely - such as if I define "/home/piers" it mounts somewhere a bit like "/mount/something/whatever/home/piers" and of course it's totally useless. Nearly all guides I found was just like that - mount everywhere but nowhere near where I needed it to be acutally mounted.

The mac, by convention, mounts volumes, either physical drives, partitions, or network volumes in /Volumes. If you follow the directions, the mounted nfs drive should be in there on boot up, I think.

You want /Users/piers (on the mac ) to point to /Volumes/nfsmount/ whatever/piers

So you need to make a symlink in /Users from piers -> /Volumes/ nfsmount/whatever/piers

Then it'll work. this is the same as the directions for moving your home directory (which it sounds like what you want to do)* which is outlined at Mike Bombich's site <http://www.bombich.com> in the system hacks section.

It would probably be a lot simpler to try this on a test user before commiting your stuff to it.

*One major potential problem with this is the fact that OS X expects your home directory to be mounted on an HFS volume; many things may or may not work if it is not.

Try a test case first, as I said.
