You can boot from a firewire drive, but I do not believe you can boot from a USB drive. However, some cheapo firewire cases do not allow booting. Anything half decent ought to work. The B&W Macs are, as far as I know, the only firewire Macs that can *not* boot from firewire. Everything after the B&W can.
