As I understand it, it is a 2x drive. Shortly after I bought it
(December 2002) they came out with 4x disks. There was a problem
with the faster disks damaging the drives, so Apple came out with a
firmware mod to keep it from trying to write at 4x. Shortly after
that Apple went to 4x drives, but I don't think any made it into
the 1GHz DPs as production ended in January 2003.
