I've got both OSX and OS9 - OS9 installed on OSX as "compatability

Will I be able to use just any phone cable with the modem or will
the Mac need a specific one? I doubt it, but asking anyway ;)

Look in the OSX help for "fax". At some point they bundled an OSS
one, in 10.3 I think.
Also, have you heard of efax? www.efax.com
free faxing thru email. you set up an account, they have a phone #
for you, faxes come in email and are viewable with their free
application, works fine. they have an OSX version on their web site,
used to have a classic version but I didn't dig. I've had a free
account for ages.
That would let you receive and print one out. You'd still have to
find a send but at least you'd have your document in the meantime.
The free efax account, your phone # will be any area code, if you
register you will get one that is a local # for your area. If you
are having a company send you something, they won't care if the
number is local or not...
www.versiontracker.com says HylaFAX is a free enterprise-quality fax
solution. OS X capable. that should be OK, if it's straightforward
to set up.
