Get a new hard drive, or reformat and re-install.

OS X is NOT problematic on good disks.

I don't do any HDD maintenance (beyond keeping backups) on any of my OS X systems and haven't had any problems for years. Disk drives shouldn't require 'maintenance'. Any drive that rewuires 'regular maintenance' is a symptom of something wrong, not the cause. (note: all you folks who swear by Nortons...most of your problems were caused by Nortons.)

That said, if you have a problem, DiskWarrior is a must-have tool in the toolbox. What Disk First Aid and DiskWarrior don't fix, reformat, re-install and restore from backups does.

Also ALWAYS run your systems on a good, functioning UPS. I swear by APC units at home and at work. Always shut down your system gracefully, don't just flip the switch on the power strip.
