Well, I'm definitely no expert on this, but a full re-install is
probably the only way. Others might have a better solution. I'd
make sure that you disconnect every USB and/or firewire device other
than the keyboard/mouse for the reinstall. Hopefully, you've backed
up all of your vital information.
Then, do the updates until you're at the latest then add peripherals
back on.
This is a revision 2 B&W? If it's a revision 1, you might have a
whole different can of worms to deal with. I recently bought one to
upgrade with the intent to give away to a needy person. It was a
revision 1 B&W. I had to add an ACARD to get the hard drives working
properly. Without it, Panther installs and Tiger installs were doing
the same thing you are describing. It was frustrating.
In the end, after upgrading the hard drive interface, video card and
adding an Aria Wireless PCI card, I had a very nice Mac. I also put
in the processor upgrade...I chose the G4 500 from Sonnet Tech.
Doing all this, I gained a lot of insight into the B&W's. Good luck.
