Greetings,
The issue is really physical - a unit can boot from either master or
slave.
In the cable chain, however, the master of the two on the bus *must* be
affixed to the end of the cable (sort of like the end of a SCSI chain
needs
to be terminated), with the slave drive in between master and bus
origin.
In an iMac I bet it would be pretty hard to snake that short cable
around t=
o
capture the ZIP at its end.
My 2=A2 worth.
Best regards,
Dana

I believe your mac will boot from a slave just fine (ICBW), but with
my
ex-beige, I could only boot from a slave via xpostfacto.
I do believe the CD-ROM has to be set to master in order to boot from
it. Again, ICBW
That's funny, I had a slave drive on the end of IDE bus chain 1 on my
G3 DT, for many months with no negative outcomes -- to run X the CD had
to be a master, & there was really no way to get the cable in there to
attach to a drive in the left bays & loop back to end with the CD.
No negatives, until just a few days ago, I booted up & my CD drive
wouldn't recognize any CDs, & my slave HD wouldn't show up on the
desktop! I've been swapping things in & out; I changed CD drives, hard
drives, cables, & buses, with the result that 1 time, System Profiler
should two CD drives on the same bus, another time I loaded just a
master hd onto my bus 1, & it wouldn't work. (It's fine back on bus 0.)
So I guess the lesson really is: don't put the slave at the end. I
guess that it's also the case that my bus 1 chip is a fritada, now? O
well, beige mobos are cheap now; I got one off eBay for $5 (& it
included a video-in/out personality card, which I didn't have before,
so it's an upgrade.) I've also been clock-chipping recently, so that
may have had something to do with it...
