Just SWAG, but
It sounds to me as if there is a nasty virus affecting things
somewhere. The 'DialTrans' sounds like something is trying to 'dial
out' to somewhere.

I have been downloading JPEG digital photos from a camera, adjusting
them in Photoshop CS2 (a.k.a. Photoshop 9) on my G4 running 10.3.9,

Friends who have been viewing these JPEG images on their own Macs or
PCs have never had any trouble opening and viewing them before.
However, today I made another batch of CDs with JPEG photos on them
(after adjusting each photo in Photoshop 9 as usual), and two of the
friends I gave them to called me this evening to say that about a
fourth of the images will not open on their computers. One has a PC
and the other a Mac, and the bad photos won't open on either one of
them. On the friend's Mac (an 8100 running Photoshop 3 in OS 8.6),
trying to open the bad ones brings up a box that says something like
"The Application DialTrans cannot be found." Neither he nor I have
ever heard of anything called DialTrans.
