Quoting AB <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>:
I used to think I knew what I was doing but after not
having any
computer projects for about a year I must have forgotten
everything.
Hi all,

I put a new ATA 160 GB Seagate in a USMicroLab
external combo
Firewire/USB case and connected it to my iBook 10.4.2 to
format. Disk Utility
did not see it via firewire or USB.<<
_

Hook the drive up again, go into (disk utility) and
format it their.
You should see the drive choose the 160 in this location
(Disk utility)
it is in the (Applications) folder on your hard drive.<
---

As stated, tried that, no drive shows up or can be seen
by Disk
Utility. Wondering if the Seagate, out of the box, was
not ready to be put in
a firewire/usb case.

End of quote.

I also use a big ATA HD in a combo case. My manual said
to jumper the drive as master before putting it in. As
most new ATA drives are jumpered as CS, cable select, you
should try to change that to master and try again.

Jörg.

I just got an external firewire drive and the only thing that would work is to have NO jumpers on the pins on the hard drive. Worked like a charm. Thought I was going bananas!
