Some of this has already been said, but based on the 6 off-list emails I've gotten since posting my replies yesterday, it needs re-saying...

as PayPal account holders seem to be spoof magnets,

99.9% of the PayPal and eBay spoofs are dictionary attacks or culls from web sites and USENET postings. I'm leaving the .1% for the occaisonal criminal armed with real ESP, etc. :)

I've had four attempts in the past several months

Only four?! :)

Some of you who know me off-list, know that I run several *small* spam-traps and a honey net. This year alone, I've received 244 eBay and Paypal spoofs and about 80 for other banks and brokerages. They're distributed about equally between the email addresses; iow the ones actualyl attached to my eBay and Paypal accts are NOT receiving special attention. Note that that doesn't count any spoofs that were caught outright by my basic spam filters. My total spam count for this year is >30,000 so far.

with ruses improving each time, cleverly playing off PP's security issues with great graphics, etc. - but thankfully, always that subtle little slip - uncharacteristic grammar, idiom, etc., so whoosh - it's off to [EMAIL PROTECTED], which of course triggers those reassuring blandishments and preachy tutorials from PP (or are they?).

I hate those canned replies. I wish they'd just turn that off altogether.

FWIW, last month eBay's "Town Hall" meeting's subject was PayPal. It was mentioned there that the messages sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] are handled within a few hours, usually resulting in a site takedown. The full transcript of the meeting is available on eBay. An interesting read.
