Just wanna say in my experience ATA drives are NOT reliable. What percentage of drives have you noticed fail in a year? Because all but one of my IDE drives have failed. So thats 4 gone bad, 1 is still working. Im not saying an ide drive wont last a year, im saying in my experience it probably wont last 4 years. maybe its not a problem to some of you who replace your hardware every few years, but I expect a drive to still be working after 4 years of use. Now SCSI has never let me down except for one particular brand, and ive had well over a dozen SCSI drives.

If you're getting a lot of drive failures then I'd suggest checking the PSU in the machines affected.

I've found dodgy/cheap/poorly made PSUs have fried components over the years, due to them gradually losing the ability to keep the 12v and 5v rails within the standard deviances of the spec.

Personally I've not had a drive fail on me in a while. The last one was a IBM 'deathstar' (75Gb), and a 4.5gb IBM Ultrastar drive. I've got a old Seagate 47Gb FW drive thats still goine strong, and must be ancient by now (full height 5.25"14/15 platters).
