Saw this utility to resize or add partitions to a hard drive WITHOUT formatting it mentioned on the iMac list. Is this really safe? Could it give any problems? What do you say, Bruce?

You rang? ;-P

Myself, I'm leery of these things,

Me too!

I'm pretty old school on this subject: if you HAVE to partition drives (and there are limited reasons to do so, imo), doing it the old fashioned way is best: back up all the data, repartition, reformat and restore the data.

Me too!

I could also be cranky and set in my ways, too. Maybe they have gotten it right with these utilities, but I'd never do something like this without a full, current backup, and since I have that anyway, why not just do it the 'right' way and save $45. <shrug> I'm cheap, too ;-)

Me too! :)

The utility must do two things:

1) Shift data around (essentially a defragment) to ensure the new volume boundry doesn't occur within an allocated file. Down side: Data corruptions propagated around.

then

2) Change the volume's partition map. Down side: A glitch during the mods may make the entire map useless. That means you loose EVERY volume on that HD. +/- where the glitch occurs, this will most often type of corruption that NONE of the diag apps (Disk Doctor etc) can fix.

There are just too many things that can go wrong...
