I don't know what to say, Andrew...I've always been able to use my Zip drive in OS X and never had to install anything from Iomega....it just worked.
I haven't used the internal IDE zip lately, it died ages ago, but the external USB one works just fine.
I suspect that it's the Iomega drivers that did it, since that's the immediate difference between our systems.
