purchased a new mac mini that arrived with 10.4 pre-loaded. Need to either drop it down to 10.3, problem is that it won't allow any generic (not machine specific) 10.3 Cds to install?

I've read that they'll only start up with 10.7 or higher?

The only thing that comes to mind is Carbon Copy Cloner using a disk with 10.3.9

yeah, that's it, so long as the new ones start up at all in 10.3. anything.

Why do you need to downgrade it? This is not generally recommended.

We like to have three partitions or more partitions (or drives) to run 10.2, 10.3, 10.4 , 10.2 upgrade, 10.3 upgrade..etc..... For testing our OS X software (http://www.microworlds.com)

The 10.3.9 drive and carbon copy cloner worked fine to load 10.3. You're sure that the mini simply won't start up in 10.2?

I doubt it. Brand new models of Macs very rarely boot up in OS versions older than the one that model shipped with. You'll be missing video drivers, motherboard drivers, optical drive drivers, etc. It's worth a try, all that will happen is it won't start, and CCC is the way to go to install it.

As for testing an upgrade versus an install, that's not really an issue with OS X, certainly not the issue it is with Windows. Moreover, depending on how you're coding things, you may be able to specify what deployment target to compile for (with compatibility with later releases). Certainly if you're using Xcode, you can specify 10.2, 10.3 or 10.4. Read <http://tinyurl.com/by2y2> in Apple's developer notes. Of course, specifying 10.2, for example, as a deployment target means you either have to limit yourself to 10.2 features, or code your own workaround for newer ones.

An old Sawtooth G4 would probably be a better testbed for this sort of thing, since it will run every version of OS X, but no excuse to get a mini then :-P
