One of our Firewire drives was getting noisy so I decided to swap the mechanism with one of the drives we keep for G4 swaps.

Opening the Firewire enclosure (a LaCie D2) and exchanging drives was simple enough, but the new drive does not show up in System Profiler or Disk Utility.

If you put in an IDE drive of any kind, it's fine, more than likely it's an issue of the master/slave settings. Look at the old drive and set the jumpers to be the same on the new drive. Also make sure the cable is seated properly and the power cable is connected.

Bruce,

There were no jumpers on the old drive.
I'll check cables inside.

The drive spins up and the blue light comes on, just no recognition on the part of the computer. Previous drive mounted OK, the new drive is a brand new 120GB Seagate Barracuda.
