That sound means it can't find anything that starts with "Mac" to
autocomplete. When you open Terminal, it automatically places you in
your home directory (/Users/userid), and since "Macintosh HD" isn't in
your home directory, it can't autocomplete it. You would also get the
noise if there were two things in the current directory that started
with "Mac".
"Macintosh HD" can be found in the /Volumes directory. Also, if
"Macintosh HD" is the drive you're booted from, then "/" (the root
directory) is the same thing.
