ATI Rage XClaim VR Pro Graphics card.
It runs Mac OS 9.2.2 quite well.
I had Panther on it, temporarily. It worked ok.
Now I've installed a (retail) Tiger on it.
"ROM ndrv for ATY,XCLAIMVRPro is too old (0xb0e7d770)."

It may be that Apple forgot to update that kernel extension before releasing 10.4. A workaround if you can't get round this by any other means would be to install XPostFacto under OS 9 and boot into X with the "Use old NDRV" option ticked in XPF. If that doesn't work your only option might be to get another video card (Rage 128s can be had very cheap now if you don't have the original card from the machine knocking around anywhere...)

And if you try either approach then run the updates to 10.4.well.whatever.it.is.then and try your XCLAIMVRPro without XPF. It's possible later versions fixed it.

Apparently the message is informational only. And the ROM updater from ATI doesn't really do anything except reset the card.

The problem turned out to to be my SCSI cards. They were there for the Panther installation, and caused no problem. So I didn't give 'em a 2nd thought. 3rd thought tho - after removing them, Tiger runs fine. Off to get the drivers for those cards now...

Thanks for your suggestions, folx!

- Dan.
