I've recently run into something very odd I thought I let you
folks know about. My lovely wife came home with an unexpected gift
for me a couple of months ago: an iPod Nano. Wow! Needless to say
it's great, but I noticed that one of the system requirements for it
is a Mac with a built-in USB 2.0 card (ironically no such requirement
for Windoze machines. . .). I have access to a couple of Macs with
said cards, but my main machines are a couple of upgraded B&W's.
Obviously these do not have built-in USB 2.0 cards but have after-
market USB 2.0 PCI cards in them. One had an Iogear card and the
other a Sonnet Tango 2.0 USB/FIrewire card. The one with the Iogear
card could "see" the iPod in the System Profiler, it would not
mount. When I plugged the iPod into the one with the Sonnet, the
System Profiler could not only "see" the iPod, but it mounted and
could be used just like the other, more modern Macs. I swapped the
Iogear USB 2.0 card out for another Sonnet Tango 2.0 card I had, and
now it works fine. I sent Sonnet an email about this and they
speculated that the Sonnet has a NEC chipset in it and perhaps the
Iogear does not. Apparently, the NEC chipset allows the iPod to see
the card as built-in. Thought you'd like to know.
