Other than press speculation, I have not found anything specific from Apple saying a "complete" transition to x86 or Intel by 2007. Jobs said their "first" deal is with Intel, and at no time did he say it's exclusive. He repeatedly said "x86", not a specific processor model.

Press release from the Mothership good enough? :-P

Yea, I read that. It's the PR issued right after his keynote (written long before probably). "and to transition all of its Macs to using Intel microprocessors by the end of 2007". That seems clear, but I don't think *Jobs* actually said that. He was careful to not indicate they were cutting off PPC totally. And since then, Apple has spent considerable time with big customers etc, smoothing ruffled feathers - repeating over and over their commitment to stick with PPC for the high-end machines.

Intel simply doesn't have anything in the pipeline that, IMO, will make it advantageous for Apple to use their processors in high-end machines.

Ultimately, I can't help but wonder how big of a mushroom cloud the other shoe is going to make when it drops... What are they going to do to stop people from putting OS X on standard x86 boxes? And how long will it take for the hackers to get around it? Or are they going to punt - phase out from being a "hardware company"? That's a company-killing quandry...

And now back to playing with Tiger on me Smurf.
