It would keep the insides cooler to use external drives. But external
drives are more expensive. They are also usually slower. For example
USB 2.0 maxes at 60MB/s, USB 1.1 at about 1.5MB/s, and FireWire 400 at
50MB/s. However, FireWire 800 is 100MB/s which is decently fast, and
faster than the QuickSilvers ATA/66MB/s. The MDD uses ATA/100MB/s. But
FireWire drives will always be more expensive than internal drives
because it is the same drive in an external case with PS, cord, fan, etc.
As far as getting a MDD instead of a QS, ALL G4s have the same exact
drive configuration, except that MDD can hold 2 5.25 externals instead
of a 5.25 and a 3.5. No G4 can hold more or less drives than another so
long as the same brackets are used. It just may happen that the MDD
always came with a dual HD bracket whereas sometimes earlier models did
not. My Sawtooth, which is an extremely early model, does have the dual
harddrive sled for a total of 5 3.5" bays and one 5.25".
