I have a 600 mHz iMac with the stock 5400 rpm 40 mb hard drive. Is it wise to upgrade it to a western digital 7200 rpm 120 mb hd? I mean will the increased rpm's cause too much heat - considering there is no fan? I would image the increased rpm's and 8 megs of cache will speed the computer up considerably - yes?

Yes, it will. There will be a noticeable (but not huge) performance boost and I doubt that a 7200 RPM drive will run that much hotter than your stock drive...at least not hot enough to pose any significant danger to your iMac. I owned a 600 MHz iMac for a while and the convection cooling system seemed to work very well; just be sure you leave enough clearance above it to ensure adequate air circulation.
