load and search the buffer would slow down the system when files of

Because memory is to disk i/o as a Ferarri is to a goat cart. Besides
this isn't handled by the OS, it's handled by the drive controller.
Granted large buffers are more useful in some situations than others,
but you're not losing out if you have it.
