OSX 10.3.9
ATA using both a SIIG 133 card and the stock bus at different times.
I did try Gerbil, but they make too big of a mess.
Darned gerbils. Cute, but unreliable.
Disconnect all the drives but one. Set it to be Master alone[*].
Boot from your OS X DVD/CD. Run Disk Utility to make sure you can
see the drive. Then do the same with each of the others, one at a
time. That will ensure the drives are working.
Then reset them to master/slave properly...
And make sure you're using the cable in the right direction. Seems
kind of silly to me, but wow did it make a diff in my b&w yesterday!
The blue connector goes to the card, the black goes to the Master
drive, and the gray one in the middle is for the Slave. That's per
the "how to install" on Western Digital's web site, and it is the
only configuration I could get to work (using WD and Quantum HDs).
[*] Check your specific drive model's jumper capabilities in the spec
sheets available online for that manufacturer. Apple doesn't do
Cable Select, so you can ignore that. But some drives have both
"Master alone" and "Master with a slave" settings. Gotta use the
right one!
