But the problem is also that the software must be able to handle
the output of the hardware layer, and there are lots of strange
'standards' floating around.
Actually, there are only a handful of CD standards out there; about
the only one in common use that Macs may have trouble with is Joliet,
and then only with OS 9, and there's a plug-in for that readily
available <http://www.tempel.org/joliet/>.
Even without the Joliet plugin the Mac can read the disk, only the
filenames are truncated to 8.3 basic ISO-9660 format.
Many systems will have issues with unclosed, packet-written disks
such as what DirectCD produces, but it's unlikely that an
organization selling disks would be using that anyway, since the
majority of their Windows-using clientele would be having the same
problem with it.
