Bruce and others, thank you for your answers in the earlier thread.
Is there an emulator without going for the full Virtual PC that can
deal with .exe ebook files which control access to .pdf files on a CD?
Is there a Macintosh-resident ebook reader that would do this?
In rummaging around various google searches, I find that for a Mac to
read an ebook, the ebook must be written to be compatible with Mac.
Also, the DOS/Windows emulators I find are the old ones, pre-OS X,
pre-OS 9 even.
It turns out that the CDs are being produced with ebook generating
software from Visual Vision.

At their web site, the product name appears to be EBooksWriter.

The genealogy surname CDs that I could buy come with .exe software to
open the files from the CD and a version to install on a PC. The tech
guy at the genealogical society tells me that security on the CD is
about extraction of .pdf files.

Hello All:
Is it possible that a CD that is readable by Acrobat Reader on a
Windows machine CANNOT be read by Acrobat Reader on our Macintosh
computers?
I belong to a genealogical society that is producing CDs, made to
order, based on a given surname.
The brochure advertising the CD production capability says that the
CD runs on MS Windows 95 through XP SP2. But catch this: "NOTE:
There is no Mac edition."
Ask them if you can just read the files with Acrobat Reader.
It may be that they've jiggered some stupid PC-only software into the
mix, but I rather doubt that.
I'd say go for it, more than likely you'll have no problems at all.
If you do I'm pretty certain there'll be SOME way to pry the
information out of the disk.
