In my experience, Printer driver installers are very notorious for messing up
file permissions. Install the drivers, then repair your disk permissions. If
they still don't work, try deleting and reinstalling the printers in printer
setup.
If you're really have problems, again make sure you have downloaded the latest
drivers and installed them, and then try printer setup (print center) repair,
http://fixamac.net (be sure to download the correct version for your
version of
OS X, in your case tiger, so Printer Setup Repair) and use it to reset
everything. Then reinstall the printers in printer setup.
Fortunately, once you have them working, you shouldn't have to mess with that
again, so long as you keep your permissions and all intact :)
I spent a good chunk of time trying to get a printer to work, lol.

Depends much on the printers. Remember, OSX is UNIX with a fancy GUI,
not at all the same thing as OS 9, so they will need different
software and drivers under OSX, unless you can run them in Classic
mode.
