I had a similar problem with my B&W G3 a couple of weeks ago. It turned out
to be a pinched wire was stripped and making bare metal contact with the
case, which I discovered while I was swapping in a new power supply. A bit
of electrical tape around the stripped wire and all was well again.

The pram battery is good (first thing I checked). A bad power supply seems
most likely in which case it may or may not be replaced as this is an
extra
machine. Their Mac of choice is the iMac with a dual 450 G4 being the
newest
Mac they have. Thanks for the ideas though.
I would check the power supply. I had this happen to me once when a
power supply went. It would flick on then off.

Check the PRAM battery while you're at it - if it's original, it's
overdue for changing. This will also cause the symptom you're
describing.
