The G3 is currently running OS 9, however I want to install a larger
than stock HDD and add some RAM so I can run OSX on it
I suppose I could install a PCI modem in it - OSX probably won't
support the Serial port - the external serial modems I have seen are
not cheap - usually around $50

That's not an internal modem. You appear to have a relatively rare
Stealth Serial Port or Griffin gPort installed in the modem slot.
If the drivers for it are installed you can use older serial
devices (modems, printers, etc.). Which OS are you running?
Where could I find a modem to fit this port, or where can I find an
internal modem for this G3
If you wanna replace the serial port with an internal modem I'd ask
for one on the Swaplist, or shop on ebay. You could also keep the
installed serial port and look for a cheap external serial modem -
those are a dime a dozen nowadays.
