One look at Apple's financial statements and you'll understand that Apple is a *hardware* company.
Your suggestion that selling OS X for generic PC hardware is going to be a good strategy is like telling Ford they salvage the business by stopping selling $20,000 cars and sell $79.99 "Ford" paint jobs and decals instead.
Apple's competitor is Dell, not Microsoft. Apple's main edge over Dell is that they're offering OS X on their computers.
