yes, this is typical for add-in controllers. The system sees the card, not the controller, like it does the ones on the motherboard. In fact, many parallel ATA cards show up as SCSI controllers in OS X (at least in 10.2, the last rev I used one with)

Is there any way to determine that I am getting the benefit of the SATA drive's speed?


It's difficult, because the PCI bus is the limiting factor here, I think.
