Be was primarily developed to be a multimedia OS, certainly capable of
all the things you mentioned. I've experimented with the PC v 5.0 and
I think it would have been an excellent OS had it been allowed to
continue. Unfortunately, it was sold off into obscurity and is no
longer being developed. Having said that, there have been several
attempts to convert it to open source and I have not really kept up
with those developments that much. After using Windows, Linux and the
Mac OS, I could see that Be attempted to combine the best features of
all of these operating systems. Whether it did or not is a matter of
one's personal opinion. A google for Beos should give you much more
info on it's present condition.
