Got a Beige with a G4 533 that has happily been running 10.2.8. Found
a G4 Server OS 9.0.3 install disk and wanted to see if it had a
universal OS 9 installer. It did not work. Popped out the CD and
restarted my Mac.
It ignored the 10.2 on the ata drive on the main HD (yes, first
partition, less than 8G) and started from the system folder I have for
classic on a SCSI drive, but it would not start up from that, being a
stripped down system folder. I unplugged the scsi drive, hoping it
would force the system to start up from 10.2 on the ata drive. No go,
blinking question mark.
Popped in the first install disk for Jaguar, hoping there was a
startup disk setting option in the disk utility, nope. Good thing I
keep an adb keyboard and mouse around.
Popped in a retail OS 9 install CD to use OS 9's startup disk utility.
Guess what?? For some freakin' reason I forgot to check install OS 9
drivers on the HD, so when I start up from the CD, it doesn't see the
10.2 disks. DOOHHH!!!
Tried zapping the pram a couple of times and it still will not start
up from the ATA disk, even with the SCSI disk disconnected. Blinking
question mark. Tried getting to open firmware (command-option O-F) and
nothing happened.
Any other ideas to get me back into 10 on my beige? My next step may
be to install X on one of the partitions on the scsi drive, then use
that systems startup disk to get back to my normal HD.
This sounds like it would be the fastest way around the problem. The
only other way I can think of, is to use XPostFacto. I THINK you can
run that in OS9, have it see the X.2.8 install and go to it. Could be
worth the time to download.

I would do this instead of an archive and install because I have a lot
of settings just right and I don't want to have to do the 2 step
upgrade (that beige is one of the ones that you need to go from 10.2
to 10.2.6 to 10.2.8)
Help please.
