The caveat:
DIGI 001 requires an older version of ProTools (v. 6.0 to 6.1); newer
versions of ProTools (6.4 and beyond) do not support the DIGI 001,
a fact my
good friend found out the hard way. So, if you get one, make sure the
software is with it, and anticipate backtracking to Jaguar or
Panther, this
last part depending on how much old updates you can sweet-talk out of
DigiDesign :-)
Tiger requires ProTools 6.9.2 (or 6.8.2 for M-Powered hardware)
which alas
has long out-paced the DIGI 001
Oh, and the 001 is PCI card *plus* I/O interface plus a short DIGI-
Snake
cable, so don't get caught with an incomplete set.
Best regards,
Dana

I' d strongly sugest Digidesign' s Digi001. You can find it
reasonably
priced at eBay, and it will fit a PCI slot on your G4.
I own one of those, hooked to a full-fledged recording studio console
for professional use, and have to say you' ll fall in love with that
thing!. It will cost you a lot less than the Mbox or any other
entry-level multitrack/multichannel unit, the sound quality is
reasonably good and smooth (IMHO better than MOTUs units and so on),
and it' s really versatile in the ways you can hook it either to a
recording console or any other king of gear.
Just have in mind it will NOT run the latest-state-of-the-art
ProTools
version, but the previous one, which still is very powerful.
Have I mentioned you can find it for cheap? :P

Hi Rick,
A couple of quick questions, as the responses will make a
difference:
1) what power G4, and will it be running Tiger (by PCI, do you mean
Yikes)?
2) are you aiming for strictly software based, or do you have some
resources
for hardware additions?
Best regards,
Dana

Ok, I expect to use an agp G4 like a Digital Audio or a Quicksilver,
probably
800 mhz or better and yes it will be running Tiger. I've worked
with
some
multitrack software like ProTools and Final Cut (which is
certainly a
multitrack
audio program), but I'm not sure what hardware is reasonably
priced to
bring in
four or more tracks of live audio simultaneously.
In terms of hardware, I'll need something to bring in a live
recording using
several mics. I know there are pci solutions, firewire
solutions and
maybe usb
hardware too, though for many tracks, I guess usb 2 would be called
for. I'd
expect 16 bit sound, with a sampling rate of 42 or 48 khz.
I'm open to advice on software too. I'm interested in having middle
school kids
work with this system so it should be fairly transparent and even
attractive to
look at, if possible. Affordable, too, if possible.
Thanks Dana, I look forward to your insight.
