Hi there all

Well i've invested in an ATA66 PCI card as it will solve a lot of problems and is cheaper then a new mobo. The memory is fine as i've never had a problem with it in the smurf before. It's just a case that it doesn't like the 60gb drive i guess but once i have the PCI card i should not only have a more stable system but also my drive access times should be up :-D

I think my next upgrade will be to a G4 sawtooth as i like the systems and the upgrade will be the most affordable for me.

Thank you everyone who replied to my plight, i'm most grateful!

Many thanks
James

Could anyone explain to me, why i might be having this problem.

Trying to install a 60gb drive on my rev 1 B/W and finally got it to install successfully but now when the machine reboots to boot OSx 10.3 of the hard drive i get a black box of doom telling me to restart my machine..This happens
straight after the grey screen with the apple and the spinning circle.

First follow all suggestions already posted like disconnecting peripherals and PCI cards, using the verbose mode on startup to see what's happening and
checking for bad RAM modules.

As a last resort before you buy that PCI ATA card (another good suggestion)
there is one other thing you can try.

You can switch the ATA buses. Switch the HDD to the CD-ROM bus and the CD-ROM on the HDD bus. Do this you will need a longer IDE internal ribbon cable for the HDD. And you will need to remove the motherboard to shift the CD-ROM IDE ribbon cables so they will fit to the other IDE connector. This is an extreme
measure but worked for me.

The only downside is that if you need to boot from the CD-ROM it will take holding the "c" key for 5 or 6 minutes before you see the Apple logo and the
gray screen when OS X startup.
