You've seen this using which updater mechanism and what product? I just ran into an example of AppFresh doing it - it wants me to get the latest version of Deeper, which is Leopard only but I'm running Tiger (my copy of Deeper is already up to date!). I think the database being used the AppFresh needs to know about OS compatibility.
