The aluminum iMac has three fans.  There are several sets of take- 
apart photos on the web including a hot link in the first paragraph

And yes, our 20 inch machine is a lot quieter than the Quicksilver 733  
ever was.  The fans are very quiet.  I do not know whether they are  
always running or thermostatically controlled.  At the moment, the  
room is at 65 degrees, and the top of iMac at the rear vents is  
slightly warm to the hand.  But working this e-mail does not make the  
CPU or the RAM work hard.

If you feel your machine is running too hot, you should compare notes  
with folks on the imaclist.  For any Mac, there are ways to measure  
operating temperatures, but I've never paid attention.
