As Dan has pointed out, the HD needs to be formated as "GUID Partition  
Scheme" in Disk Utility in order to boot an Intel Mac. All OEM USB HDs  
are formated as "Master Boot Record" initially, which is unbootable on  
any Mac except a hackintosh PC.
