Yup, and some Sony drives are actually Pioneers.

When Pioneer OEMed some of its drives to others, occasionally they  
would put in a hack which prevented the drive from being FLASHed back  
to what it was.

I have some Sony-branded drives which are actually Pioneer DVR-110s,  
and if you try to FLASH the drives back to DVR-110, DVR_Flash tells  
you that the drive is a Sony, not a Pioneer.
