The former requires the latter to happen, but they're separate events) Do you mean that the CD drive doesn't even spin up when you put in a problem cd with the ethernet in? This would almost certainly indicate weird hardware issues with the drive. Fortunately this is, at most a $20-$30 fix, a fix that'll get you a faster, more capable drive, too. For the G5's you need to remove the front tray face of any drive, but those usually just snap on from the top.
