(Note, there's a difference between mounting and spinning up. The  
former requires the latter to happen, but they're separate events)

Do you mean that the CD drive doesn't even spin up when you put in a  
problem cd with the ethernet in?

This would almost certainly indicate weird hardware issues with the  
drive.

Fortunately this is, at most a $20-$30 fix, a fix that'll get you a  
faster, more capable drive, too.

For the G5's you need to remove the front tray face of any drive, but  
those usually just snap on from the top. This is an easy fix, I've  
replaced several.
