Slashdot had an update on the issue that causes some Seagate HDs to have problems: <http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=09/01/17/0115207>
It points to a Seagate Knowledge Base article which states that MANY larger Seagate HDs manufactured until Dec.2008 have a firmware defect and likely need a firmware update to eliminate this issue. See: <http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=207931 > My G5 has two 500 GB HDs as a stripe RAID pair that are included on this list. It appears the Seagate programs to test and upgrade the firmware are Windows only. I'm guessing that I can't upgrade the firmware without destroying the data on my drives? So far I've had no problems AFAIK so I'll probably forgo this firmware upgrade for now. Seagate is offering "data recovery services" for customers who have lost data due to this firmware issue.
