I had the same problem with an earlier version of OS 10.5.  It was due  
to corruption in Spotlight which actually does the searching for  
Mail.  Two people in this list were a great help with a set of  
commands to be rendered in Terminal.  I will not risk trying to repeat  
the details myself.  But if Bruce and Dan do not pipe up, I suggest  
you re-post in a day or two with a new subject line to catch their  
eye:  "Spotlight Problem in Mail."
