Hi Ken,

I installed the Pioneer DVR-116D lately, it's a cheap fast drive. Yes
you need Patchburn if you want to burn from the Finder. But if you use
Toast for burning you'll have all the speeds available w/o Patchburn.

There is also a speedburn patch on the net so you will be able to
access faster burning speeds as well as a RPC-1 patch so your drive
won't have to switch regions.

You can update the firmware on your Mac using DVRFlash. It's a
straightforward Terminal app, just pull the (patched) firmware into
the Terminal.
