There are several ways to do this (as straight guitar audio into a track in Garageband) or as a MIDI controller device (somewhat more complex). I am assuming you simply want to connect an audio signal (in this case, the guitar output) into GarageBand to direct-record the audio tracks. For that, you can simply connect, for example, the Line-Out from an electric guitar amp into the audio input jack on the Mac. This is simplest and will only involve purchasing a cable or two that will get you from whatever output jack is on the amp to a mini-phone plug. You will likely need some form of preamplification if you wanted to go straight from your guitar into the Mac's input jack. Likely, you'll want to pre-process the signal in any case... You may, instead, want to go for some form of analog-to-digital converter, that will interface either into USB or Firewire. For this, I use the Edirol AudioCapture UA-20, which plugs into the computer's USB port, and supplies stereo audio input ports, audio monitoring output, and MIDI input and output ports as well. This allows MIDI control devices to be able to control the GarageBand built-in software instruments, as well as combining an analog audio signal, such as your guitar. This device is known to work well with GarageBand. I'm sure there are others, but that's the one I have some personal experience with.
