Humm. This sounds frustrating. Perhaps using a batch thumbnail & icon application could help? I've used ThumbsUp 4.4 before, it's a drag & drop batch thumbnail and/or custom icon maker. If you only need the custom icons, select that in preferences and then drag & drop your entire photo folder onto the ThumbsUp icon and it should create the custom icons for every photo within whatever folder you choose.
