Textedit comes WITH OS X, don't know about that OS you're claiming to  
use, and if you set it to plain text it stays that way until you  
switch it to RTF.

TextWrangler (free) (Also the text editor I use for all of my  
programming)
Jedit
Smultron
AquaEmacs

vi, pico and emacs are also built in.
